Bob Chapman talks Graphitti Designs Gallery Editions

Felix Lu interviews Bob Chapman about Graphitti Designs and their Gallery Edition line. Well worth the listen. A few key points in the interview. A Batman: Year One David Mazzucchelli Gallery Edition will be published at some point. Chapman was asked by DC to wait for the Absolute Batman: Year One to run its course. Released in November 2016, I’d say it’s done what it will. Secondly Chapman discusses Terry Moore Strangers In Paradise Gallery Edition and testing the waters for this type of book from smaller publishers. I was hoping to hear more about the two previously mentioned...

John Lind talks Sin City Curator’s Collection

I’m late to the party here, but over at Print John Lind talks about Frank Miller’s Sin City: The Hard Goodbye Curator’s Collection. Here are highlights of the salient AE information. It’s well worth a full reading. With the editorial direction of the Curator’s Collection series, I made a conscious effort to include additional essays and commentary. for context. They round out the experience and help solidify these books as mini “time capsules” of how these landmark graphic novels were created. This is something that wasn’t really being included in other publishers’ versions of this format. Being on the...

Charles Burns talks Black Hole

Over at Vulture Charles Burns talks about Black Hole. Here’s the salient AE information. Why do this studio-edition reprint? What was the impetus behind it? The impetus behind it was pretty much I’ve got a flat file that’s still filled with my originals, and I look at it periodically. There’s something about just the size, and the scale, and the look that I still enjoy. I got in touch with Eric Reynolds at Fantagraphics, because I realized they were doing a similar size-scaled book of Jaime Hernandez’s work. I just asked if they were interested. That’s surprising — I...

Titan editor Steve Saffel asked. Then we had to get permission from the Library of Congress, where all the art resides in their permanent collection. Martha Kennedy, the head of their Prints and Drawings Division, suggested that Steve come down to Washington D.C. for a few days and scan all the original pages himself, and he did. I don’t know if you’ve ever been there but the holding of the...

Fantagraphics Studio Edition: Black Hole By Charles Burns

Content updated December 18, 2017. Charles Burns’s graphic novel Black Hole is one of the medium’s most iconic works of the 21st century, a towering achievement by a master cartoonist, and perennial classic some 15 years after its initial release. Set in suburban Seattle during the mid-1970s, it’s the story of a strange plague that has descended upon the area’s teenagers, transmitted by sexual contact. The premise lends itself to metaphorical interpretations as well as functioning as a perfect outlet to mine teen ennui and puberty-induced anxiety. This Fantagraphics Studio Edition showcases Burns’s original art for the book, featuring exact reproductions...
