The Cartoon Art Museum presents Raw Fury: The Art of Mike Zeck in a career retrospective on display from April 5 to August 10, 2014. This exhibition features the most comprehensive collection of the fan-favourite artist’s most iconic artwork ever assembled, including The Punisher, G.I. Joe, The Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars, and Captain America. A full-colour exhibition catalogue will be published in conjunction with the exhibition, featuring more than 50 pieces of original artwork, an introduction by exhibition curator Charles Costas, and commentary from Zeck himself.

A catalogue from the Cartoon Art Museum’s 2014 exhibition of the same name. A wide swath of Marvel material from Zeck’s career, with a large focus on the Punisher. Also an introduction by Charles Costas and chapter introductions by Zeck.
The scan quality is excellent: everything is well presented with no issues. Some of the art has had its edges cropped. No margin notes. Blacks show no gradients. There is coloured work included but it appears to be the published art and not scans of the painted original art.
A very straightforward design, block text overlayed over image enlargements. Page numbers run along the bottom middle. The tables of contents list the work with pencil, ink, and colour credits.
Production is quite good. A glued binding of heavy glossy paper, perfect bound. I’m not a fan of glossy paper for original art, but it does make the colour pages pop.
I picked this up from Mike Zeck at a con in Hamilton Ontario for $40 CAD in 2015, which included a signature. The overlap with Mike Zeck’s Classic Marvel Stories Artist’s Edition means I haven’t given this volume much attention, but the Cartoon Art Museum has put out several show catalogues that feature original art. There is a good amount of material here we don’t see elsewhere.
