Gabriel Rodriguez’s Locke & Key: Artist’s Edition Portfolio

Gabriel Rodriguez's Locke & Key: Artist's Edition Portfolio

From the people who bring you the Eisner Award-winning Artist’s Edition series, comes the next Artist’s Edition portfolio: 12 reproductions of covers and interior pages from the just-concluded Locke & Key by the series’ artist/co-creator, Gabriel Rodriguez! And, remember, this is a premium portfolio-like the Neal Adams Thrillkill and Bernie Wrightson Muck Monster portfolios before it-and matches the exacting quality of all previous Artist’s Editions.

As with all AE format material (Artist’s Editions, Artifact Editions, Gallery Editions, Art Editions, Studio Editions, etc), this is a collection of classic comic material and I’ll be reviewing the book and not the story. For a complete list of all current and announced editions, with review links, please visit our Index. Also, see What is an Artist’s Edition and our Artist Index.

A mixture of covers, interiors and double pages spreads. It’s an odd mix of material from Rodriguez to represent Locke & Key.

Scans are very clear and clean; no visual issue whatsoever. Lots of blue pencils throughout. No use of correction fluid. A nice mix of penciled and inked work.

A first for the AE line showing Chris Ryall as editor. Design is by Robbie Robbins with the note “based on design by Randall Dahlk”.

Production is excellent. Very heavy matte paper stock. Thick hardcover stock for the portfolio with a glued pocket for the plates. The pocket is a big looser than previous IDW portfolios, but because of the inside bottom lip I still had to insert them in two batches.

The portfolio comes in a mylar bag. For some reason, the UPC was covered with a larger UPC sticker.

On the back of each plate shows “This is NOT a page of original art”.
